Tomorrow for my english exam, I have to write an essay within the theme of ‘Justice’
Since it is something that I think needs to be brought to the attention of my school, I decided that I would write about rape culture. Although I attend a Christian school, I hear rape jokes on a regular basis and that is really not okay. I have realized that when I try to discuss the topic with my peers, most are completely uneducated about it. Some of the boys (and girls!) at my school are incredibly misogynistic and they don’t even realize it. As well, there is a very strict dress code. The reasoning behind it is so that boys won’t get distracted and sexual harassment can be avoided. When I found this out, I felt sick. I would think that, especially in a Christian environment, this should not be a problem. Us women should be entitled to wear whatever we want whenever we want, and we should never have to stop and think; “Will this be too distracting?” “Will I be raped when I wear this?” “Can I avoid distracting others and avoid rape if I cover up more?” A woman’s body is not something that you can stare at or take advantage of whenever you please, it is a body that contains a soul. On another note, do the people who made these rules truly believe that all men are like that? And for the ones that are, if showing my shoulders is too distracting for you, it’s you that has got the problem.
I’m very interested in hearing everybody elses opinions on the topic of justice and rape culture. It would be a huge help if you guys could leave me messages telling me your opinions and stories about this subject. I will not publish them without your permission. Thanks xx
A woman’s body should not be looked at as an object that you can look at or use whenever you please. A woman should be comfortable being naked in front of a man without him immediately thinking “I want to have sex with that woman.”
A woman should be looked at as a person.
